Congratulations to Shonkweni Water Avengers from South Africa for making a splash and being awarded Water Explorer’s current top team!
Shonkweni Water Avengers from Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Coast, joined Water Explorer earlier this year and despite having received only one support visit so far, they have made tidal waves of effort. They have been awarded the "TEAM OF THE MONTH "for June. They started their grey water collection project with great avengence which was not only about collecting the water for use in their vegetable gardens but for also undertaking an experiment using the scientific method. They tested to see if a bean would grow better with tap water or grey water. The results were illuminating: the bean grown with grey water grew faster and as healthily as that watered with tap. The learners were able to deduce that this was because of the added nutrients (phosphates/nitrates) in the water, which also indicated that indeed, using grey water on vegetable gardens is ok!
All the classes have installed tippy taps which saves 100s of litres of water daily. As a result, there should be enough water in their jojo tanks to see them through the Winter if they continue with their grey water collections. Decorated drinking buckets are placed in each class. There are delightful water saving posters displayed around the school.
The Water Avengers celebrated World Oceans and World Environment Day by involving the whole school on a 'waste' awareness campaign and are committed to up-cycling and reducing plastic use as far as possible. A leaking pipe and a faulty jojo tank have also been fixed! So well done to Shonkweni Water Avengers we are delighted to have you on board and look forward to see what you get up to next!
